I think the thing is:

Music today has less meaning to a society as a whole. Back then there weren’t too many choices to get you out of a 9-5 lifetime of work. Football or a ‘pop star’ was about it. Also everything seems more meaningful when you’re young. Music is sidelined today and less the central defining theme to young men’s lives. Or something
