In my Dad's time at Lincoln City, the goalie got a fractured skull

This was approx 1961. He was a highly rated keeper, scouted by Div 1 teams. Came back the next season, but his judgement on crosses and was never the same again. After approx 10 games back he had to be dropped and it was the end of his career. The most tragic thing was that the incident that did for him was a revenge foul from a thug of a CF at Charlton Athletic, who came off the worse from a collision with the goalie's knee in the teams' previous meeting. It could be really brutal in those days.
