But HoG is but one instance of a man whose burning desire to win meant that he was absolutely willing to engage in cheating. That's not someone I can admire (though obviously I acknowledge that he may have been the best footballer ever).
Take Usain Bolt. He's always been very public about being clean. So not only is the he greatest sprinter every (so far), but he's not cheating. I massively admire him. If in ten years time it emerged on a retrospective testing of his samples that he'd been cheating all along, not only would I be gutted but I'd be FURIOUS. Because the character of the man matters much more than his times. (I know this is an imperfect analogy because drugs improve your sprinting times much more significantly than drugs enhance your footballing ability. Though I've often wondered if Maradona got those thighs through early steroid use, before he was being tested. They're a classic roid thigh.).
