Hard to see how the economy would survive, at least in the form that we knew it

I don’t disagree that the infection rate could be kept a lot lower if morons did what they should. I drove through my local town at the weekend and it was rammed, it was not people just out on essential trips to the shops.

Basically all forms of mass transit would be out under that approach because masks are not THAT effective. It would work in rural Norfolk, but hard to see how in a city context it would. Or in a football ground context!
