except that it is becoming more skilful

the extra pace of the game means it is more important now for players to have high levels of technical ability. Players who take ages to control a bill now cannot prosper at the top levels.
Ten years ago players could play in the top flight (especially in Britain) based simply on the fact that they "had a good engine" and could get "stuck in" up and down the pitch. Now, when top clubs can get technically proficient players from all over the world, that is no longer the case.
I still find it incomprehensible that 2 summers ago Worthy didn't spot the fact that there are NO players as technically limited as Flem and Holt thriving in the Prem. There simply is no place for them there anymore (as there was when Worthy was playing).
I agree that players are getting bigger, stronger, and faster but (and this is where Waghorn gets his argument totally wrong) they are also getting better technically. It is precisely players like Hughes who not cannot play at teh top level.
