Isn't the point that it never did say what gender a person was?

I think it's a bit silly really as I don't see why the word actress is offensive, but that's not for me to judge.

Those that think actor should apply to both men and women would point to descriptors like "female doctor", "male nurse" etc as unnecessary gender based descriptions of a profession that can be undertaken by a man or a woman.
