I imagine he will stay with Mercedes for a few more years though.

The interesting thing about the MotoGP test was that there is a MotoGP team sponsored by Petronas - the same as his F1 car - but that wasn't the team he tested with. He tested with Rossi who has set up his own rider training academy so maybe more than just a publicity stunt.
