Not a political post, but perhaps a reflection on the times we live in

I'm not foghorning about politics here. Too much of that already this morning. Ultimately, f**k the US. The whole world is going to hell in a handcart anyway, so they may as well join us. But I thought folk might be interested in this - unless you're not of course, in which case, carry on, have a nice day.

The story begins here.

There's a guy in the US who has exactly the same name as me. Probably by no means a freak occurrence. I mean there's a lot of people in the world. But anyway, there is this guy. And many years ago we both registered gmail accounts. I took firstnamesecondname@gmail.com. My US namesake took firstname.secondname@gmail.com.

See the difference? That little in the middle there.

Again, no drama. There's probably loads of people in a similar situation, with 1000s of variants of essentially the same email address.

But the thing is, my namesake keeps forgetting to put the dot in. So he sign up for loads of crap websites, using my email address by mistake. Store cards. Accounts where he can register his new fridge. Offers at car show rooms. (One time, a "dating" website that had the tagline in its email correspondence "get f**ked tonight". Classy.)

And recently, he signed up as a supporter of the Trump-Pence re-election campaign. Using my email address, not his.

Since then I have been receiving (as a conservative guess) 30 to 50 emails a day from the Trump-Pence team. They are written as if they are from senior team individuals, always from a person directly to me, never from some faceless "team". So I get several email a day apparently from:

- Donald
- Donald Jr
- Eric
- Ivanka
- Newt Gingrich
- Chris Christie
- Chuck Grassley
- Ted Cruz
- etc etc

the list goes on and on. They all follow a similar format, of hyperbolic language, the most random formatting (bold, HUGE FONT, underline, random colours). And they are all inciting me to do one thing. No, not vote. Make a cash donation - NOW!

"We can see from our list that you havent paid yet. Are you not an American PATRIOT! The Left hates this country and we need to fight to stop them. Help us fight communists. Donate to Trump-Pence. NOW!".

So really, this is now just a money raising effort, presumably to fund....who knows. The Republican Party? TV ads. A prolonged court case around the election. Trump's business losses? His lavish lifestyle? Really unclear.

Who wants to see the latest email I got? Okay, here it is then.

WOW. We are WINNING like no one thought possible right now.

Despite the numbers that are very obviously in favor of YOUR President, THE DEMOCRATS WILL TRY TO STEAL THIS ELECTION!

Interesting no? What a world we live in, where such email are routinely sent to voters. No idea of course what the Biden-Harris campaign are sending out - maybe this is totally normal - and again this is NOT a political post just a "look what I saw today" post. But it feels more like pyramid selling than democracy doesnt it?

So yeah. Pretty f**ked up.
