The key driver of the pandemic is the behaviour of those who are infected. The sacrifices of e.g. 100 people are negated by the one t**t who isn't going to let his new, persistent cough get in the way of a night down wetherspoons.
All politicians know that people aren't going to abide by rules over Christmas. Many will take the view that BoJo isn't going to prevent them from spending Christmas with their elderly relatives.
A Christmas lockdown is both political poison and pointless. They will need to try to get numbers down before Christmas, have an open Christmas and try to deal with the aftermath in the new year.
I do completely agree that an open Christmas will be undoing all the good work but I think many won't give a toss. I think what we currently have is some sections of the population simply not following any government advice. I forsee this section growing as frustration with the restrictions increases.
