but the hygiene side is both interesting and disgusting in equal measure.

A colleague in Hong Kong, who have a lot of experience with masks, was telling me that they have special pouches/wallets for their masks and use them to remove the mask to so they never touch it once worn. The used mask is then put directly to the laundry.
