The buck stops with the government

Scientists only advise and indeed you can cherry pick what individual members of Sage have said. They were also told at the outset to focus on mitigation because a stringent lockdown wouldn't be acceptable in this country. The fact is scientists all round the world looked on in bemusement as Boris just told us to wash our hands for weeks.

I don't think even anyone in government would claim they got the lockdown timing right so not sure why you are defending them.
