yeah, it's a bit scary

where I live (Spain), the government declared a state of alarm, which is a similar kind of thing. It basically gave them dictatorial powers to impose any law they liked without going through parliament. And then they needlessly kept extending it for weeks longer than it was necessary, just out of 'convenience'.

One of the first things they did was to prevent people from leaving the house for seven weeks, even to go for a short walk or do exercise. Which was then enforced it using the police and the army, and even started fining people for 'desobediencia' - basically for any kind of protest at the loss of liberty.

They even claimed that there decisions were all being justified by independent health and legal experts. Only to later admit they had made the experts up.

And yet still, there has been very little protest about any of this from a large portion of the population.

Like in the UK, politics here has become very partisan and polemic. People just blindly supporting 'their side' whatever they do. And this was from a centre-left govt, so very different to in the UK, and one that you think might be a bit slower to curb freedoms.
