Our economy is heavily based on the service industry, perhaps more so than others. Is that a reason why? I think I also read the economic impact looks worse in the UK compared to other nations due to when it hit us.
Regarding deaths, I rightly or wrongly or maybe naively believe our figures compared to other nations are more accurate. There's been reports that Spain, for example, had tens of thousands more deaths than officially reported (which makes sense given the horror stories there early days). I remember early on that the excess deaths in lombardy were insanely high, something like five times more than the reported number of covid deaths. I'm also not sure every nation is reporting deaths in the same way - England recently changed the definition to bring it inline with the rest of the UK which reduced the number by thousands. Ultimately we won't know for years.
Ultimately I'm genuinely not sure what more the government could have done in the early days. They evidently took advice from the CMO who happened to also be an epidemiologist and ultimately he is way more qualified than Boris/me/you on the subject.
