Would have thought a car would be more useful to get around so many places, although that's a lot of driving. And traffic in the cities might be a pain. Car hire is not outrageously expensive though.
Then again, German public transport is really good and fast between cities - of course, it's likely to be heavily used during the WC, but they'll be expecting that. If you overnight, the sleeper seats are not that comfortable (just recline a long way), so I'd get a cabin with beds - if I recall correctly, there's a 4 bed option or a two bedder - the latter is more expensive and has sink and maybe a shower as well.
