it's called "upselling" mon amis

It's a mechanism wherby businesses use their staff to promote add-ons and they get them to try and persuade customers to increase their spend at the point of sale and thus increase their bottom line. normally these staff are, like you, just going about their daily lives trying to earn a crust and not being a burden on the state. generally these folks are low paid. I'm guessing businesses incentivise* their staff to promote "add-ons" or "frou-frou" that the customer (e.g. you) didn't even consider they might need in their life and maybe business owners might even pay them back a small proportion of the profit in some instances to enhance their staffs minimum wage packets.

So, here's a tip next time your boss sends you out of the office all day to yet another characterless s**thole of a town, try saying to the person (n.b. a person who is there serving you and not just an "irritant") behind the till "how much is the special roast and the shot of coconut milk my freind?" and the feller is like "it's 40p each" then you could try saying "you know what, i don't want the special roast nor the shot of coconut milk but take 80p as a tip for yourself, hell round it up to a pound and have a great day" then when you pick up your campachoochoo or your mochafrimpong (it doesn't matter which drink you actually had nobody actually gives a s**t) then you can walk away feeling a little bit like the decent human being that lurks somewhere deep within you.

*PM Grammer Stasi, Yes i verbalised a noun but before you clip on a full magazine, make-ready and flip the change lever to automatic, i was being empathetic to my audience. x
