Bank I worked at did that for a little while

for staff morale after a bit of an incident.

The problem when it is free is that people take the piss - one bloke came and took a case of chocolate bars, another team were ordering Costa coffees and cakes for every tea break instead of using the (admittedly s**te) usual staff instant coffee etc.

To the extent that stuff ran out and other staff suffered.

It's fairer for all to run a paid-for (but still heavily subsidised) canteen.
