and they don't experience it themselves, so often say that there hasn't been an increase in racism or xenophobia since the referendum (for example), because they themselves haven't noticed it.

Neither have I, first hand, but my step-daughter (half Indian) has - and specifically related to Brexit (ludicrously) - so it does happen.
