You didn't get that impression watching them. Don't get me wrong, they were great, but we had a negative goal difference for a reason. A lot of narrow scraped wins with a few real thrashings suffered. If anything the league table was very flattering to us that season , and you could play that season over and over again with us playing that standard of football and we'd never come as high as 3rd again. Certainly not win the title. And of course that team was living above our means, costing us money we didn't have, hence the subsequent events...
