One line placed at the legal ball-playing part of the defender closest to goal...

...but make it a foot wide, as the indication is that there's up to c.30cm of error in the VAR cameras.

If any ball-playing part of the attacking player is beyond that line you're offside - you'll still get pixel-tight calls, but there's a margin of error built in to the analysis/review.

Would lead to quicker reviews, and less 'come on now, that's ludicrous!' reactions.
