When it’s as marginal and debatable as it was today it seems ridiculous not to give the goal - what advantage would Pukki get for his shoulder or whatever being centimetres at best ahead of the defender? None at all - makes no difference to whether or not he would have scored that and is no advantage over the defence. Without VAR that would be given at all levels of football, or at least 99 out of a hundred times.
When calls are this tight, allow the ref to look at replays to see whether the evidence is clear enough to overturn - if not the goal stands. The technology is not bulletproof when it comes to accuracy as it depends on camera angles, frames of recordings etc and thus can’t 100% say whether it is definitively offside at the moment the pass was released. When decisions are this close the technology isn’t trustworthy - hence introducing a margin of error and/or ref’s call element would make sense
