first thing they need to do

is to stop worrying about whether the leader is black, brown, male, female or whatever - it really, really doesn't matter to the vast majority of people - just try to pick the right person.

second - sincere is good, better than insincere ... but let's face it, corbs didn't lack in sincerity ... all rather depends what it is you're sincere about.

And yes - don't worry about the odd joke/comment from the past - (i) not many people do (see actual reality), and (ii) good luck finding a saint.
