as they'd have won a few seats back in the late 90s so the main parties, being alive to the risk of them winning more, would have dealt with the 'Europe issue' or 'immigration issue' long before either of them became such an festering open sore that they resulted first in a referendum and then the resulting national self-immolation.

PR gives people more of a voice, so that they don't need to turn to extremist parties to try to be heard.
