15 years ago you got sent their application forms and CVs and that was it. You'd have to do your own research or ask the right questions in the interview slot. It's generally Mr & Mrs Miggins from down the road making the decisions. They are not politically or media savvy enough to think about what skeletons might be lurking in the closet.

CCHQ, however, for a prime 'safe' seat, well. Beggars belief.

I can only think that he has friends in CCHQ/does a lot of 'party work' behind the scenes so they've green lit him for this seat knowing that the majority should be comfortable enough to weather the storm of controversy.
