Not because of some crass remarks he once made, we've all done & said stupid things that we would be mortified to see splashed across the news/twitter.
But because he seems to have completely failed to appreciate that those comments would be pounced upon.
Any half-decent aspiring politician would have foreseen that danger, and would have preemptively prepared a response and defence to the mud being slung at him. A proper aspiring politician would have long ago done some rape survivor outreach work.
So he's either not very bright, or is arrogant enough to think he he can just shrug it off, or he doesn't see the big deal about the original comments.
Not for me, Clive.
The surprise in this isn't that he hasn't done this, nor that the local party chose him (I've sat on one of these panels for another Tory association and they are overly impressed by local and 'famous' candidates). I'm simply amazed that he passed CCHQ's selection vetting to make the shortlist in the first place.
