We currently have only one less win than I'd have realistically hoped for at this stage

I'd have optimistically hoped for three if we'd beaten Newcastle and Villa (the only games so far this season where I'd have given us a GOOD chance of winning) and somehow sneaked an away win somewhere. We didn't manage to beat Villa or sneak an away win but we did get a bonus win over Man City so we're still hanging in there...
