He DID sort it out in his first season with the 3 CB formation

He didn't need to last season because the attacking formation was winning more games and that (rather than draws) is what gets you automatic promotion.
However survival in the league can be done with a fair number of draws (hence Pulis's survival for so many years) so return to the 3 CB formation would be a great option. Sadly injuries mean it hasn't realistically been possible so far.
