Think he’s just achieved what he wanted if the EU grant extension. All he wanted was

the power. He doesn’t have the majority so he needs an election. He comes up with an adjustment to may’s deal which the EU would accept and which parliament would have to accept and then immediately offers an opportunity for remainers to block it by giving his 3 day plan ultimatum.

Outcome is that to the leave camp, which is certainly large enough to get him the majority he needs, he portrays himself to be the man who has agreed a deal with the EU and parliament yet scuppered by remainers. EU will grant an extension and Johnson will go to an election and get his majority.
