You can get to most places in East Anglia from Norwich directly by train.

Diss, Ips**t, Colchester and Chelmsford are all on the mainline to London and there are regular trains to Cromer/Sheringham, Yarmouth and Cambridge/Ely too.
There are direct trains to Nottingham, but they go round the houses a bit.
You might find they're a bit pricey though!

I don't drive, but whenever I've been on the continent with friends driving it's always been roundabouts that have nearly caused them the most problems; my mate nearly killed us going the wrong way onto a roundabout in Belgium and that was a bit scary...
