Are they even his employers?

International duty isn't directly comparable to an employer/employee relationship.

ie, is it really any of their business what he does once *they* have decided they don't want him on England duty? Any 'employer' relationship surely ends once he's been removed from the squad and training camp.

Whether it is necessarily wise for him to do it, who knows. That's between him and the selectors. But if attending a casino whilst not on international duty is going to bar a footballer from selection, we might have a smaller pool of players to select from.
