Given the speeds people ride those things, not sure how possible it would be

for a kid to get 'thrown' from one.

Also suspect the injuries sustained by kids in them is very, very low - probably close to zero. In comparison, say, to the high (and rising) number of pedestrians killed after being hit by vehicles. None of whom wear helmets, which doesn't seem to be annoy people very much.
