the backstop in some way has always been one area I felt that the EU should compromise. Its not reasonable to expect us/NI to be locked in indefinitely. Whether or not 4 years will be long enough for them (or they will want some other preconditions to leaving) I don't know but in essence its "no deal measures/sh*t now" or possible "no deal measures/sh*t" in 6 or 10 years time when at least we will all be prepared for it but of course if its working well for NI then they will most likely just stay in.
I think the significance of making it an NI specific decision is really its hard to argue against that because its akin to self determination. Mind you the Scots will be p**sed off as they will say they should have the same!
I think its a perfectly reasonable proposal but no doubt it will be shot down in flames immediately by various people.
