that is a very difficult question

first i would say personally i am unsure if there is a right or wrong and i would question whom makes these kind of decisions based on my own experience

slightly diverging, i think to my knowledge we have the best laws in the world and primarily for that reason i would prefer to live here than anywhere else. ok, i am biased because i've spent 99% of my life here, and also no set of laws will ever be perfect and that is important to understand.

back to your point, the liberty of an individual to insist they are right despite is of the upmost importance, having said that you/we have to at some point sometimes intervene, which is unfortunate but necessary, on some cases.

i've been there ive done that and i think i can understand both sides. none of this will help you! but i would hope that any kind of decision of that kind would at least partly be based upon empathy and understanding of the other individual, whether right or wrong, whichever right or wrong we are talking about, be it may yours, theirs, or a the law.
