despite being in a coalition with the tories, the libdems gave up on all of their promises

and did nothing to stop the tories advancing their agenda. Tuition fees, a cornerstone of libdem policy, were tripled while they were in govt.
That tells you very clearly how effective they would be in coalition with an even more nationalist rightwing tory govt.
