The backstop is actually irrelevant to us...

unless we ARE actually planning on breaking the Good Friday Agreement, which would finish us as someone you could negotiate with in good faith.
The reason Boris and his ilk have focussed on it is not because it matters to us (or them) but because they know it is something the EU cannot (and, of course, should not) budge on, enabling them to portray the EU as intransigent to people (obviously the majority) who don't actually understand it ("not our fault, we would have signed a deal if only the EU had moved on the backstop")
