Young midfielders coming through in Maddison, Mount and Foden but they all play the same role and it’s a role that Southgate’s preferred formation doesn’t need/have.

He likes to play 4-3-3 with two quick, athletic wide men and I’m not convinced he has the tactical nous to set up the side to accommodate players like the three mentioned above. I’m not really convinced by Southgate tactically at all to be honest even though I think he’s doing a decent job. One the two or three occasions where games have needed a tactical change he’s not done anything early enough.
