Murphy proves an example of nicer generation
Josh Murphy: After scoring in the home draw with Fulham, the Cardiff City winger spotted a young, starstruck fan waiting by the tunnel for him. When Murphy handed him his shirt, the boy burst into tears and hugged him. The footage on social media, posted by the BBC’s Chris Wise, garnered four million views and triggered an outpouring of admiration for Murphy. “Is it me or are this generation of footballers, for all their big money & the privilege that brings, just a bit nicer?” asked one fan. The answer is probably yes. Of course, they should engage like this because a few seconds of their time can gift a fan a memory that lasts a lifetime. They do care, although it is partly the all-pervasive social media highlighting such gestures more. Murphy is 24, was raised at Norwich City’s academy where they focus on the person as well as the player, and definitely reflects a welcome trend away from the “too much, too young” excesses that were prevalent a decade ago.
