The point I was trying to make though is that I think there is a difference between unprovoked abuse and what you sometimes get at football which is people hurling abuse across a fairly narrow divide.

That’s not to say any of it is right but it’s what has always happened and what probably always will and I do think context is relevant to a degree.

Men get called w***ers or t**ts or (as was the case today repeatedly but nobody seems bothered by that) paedo and I think in some people’s minds calling a woman a whore is probably equivalent to calling a bloke a w**ker.

Of course if my daughter got called a wh*re by a bunch of blokes I’d be upset but if she had spent the previous 20 minutes baiting them and hurling abuse in their direction I would at least partly understand how the situation escalated to that incident. If it was out of the blue and unprovoked it would be a lot worse.
