You know one of the big EA sports games for years has been John Madden Football (currently Madden 20)? The American football equivalent of FIFA. Well they pay image rights to the players to use their likeness and information, and I’m sure it’s the same for FIFA.
However, years ago they did a college football version which was far better - NCAA football - because college footballers many more teams and is more varied in tactics etc.
However, the American system demands that college athletes become ineligible if they receive any benefits for their sports activities. This is bad enough when the teams fill out 100k+ stadiums with huge ticket prices without the players earning a penny from it.
Therefore EA sports were not allowed to pay the college players for their image rights, and just got permission from the NCAA to use them. The players challenged this, and the result was there’s been no NCAA football game since then. They simply can’t get around the rule.
Years later those players who had been featured collectively sued for damages and received about 3k each I think (including a friend of mine. Of course st that stage they were allowed to because it no longer mattered for their college eligibility.
