Not really . That was more syndication. But the thing is that people never did want to pay

for news. They would pay for in depth articles, mostly back in the days when it was the only source, and one would read the newspaper whilst eating breakfast or whilst expelling one's dinner.

At least since the advent of TV, newspapers never made their money from sales to consumers. They make their money from selling at a very low price - sometimes even at a loss - to increase the circulation in order to attract advertising.

Why would companies want to invest in advertising behind paywalls? It just doesn't make sense. It is just reducing the about of eyes which will see the advert, or convert on it.
