I’ve also seen the full independent report, because I’m a geologist and that stuff is interesting to know in the event that we have similar issues.
Blasting was absolutely not a part of the problem. The geology in the area is well defined and structurally sound relative to other places. The main issue with this particular dam was the failure to identify dam fatigue and the failure on the companies involved and the authorities to have a stringent inspection regime in place, such as other more developed nations.
The liability absolutely falls with our company but also that of the local and national mining authorities. The mining industry in South America is working hard to change though after Samarco, Escondida and a series of other like for like events.
