False dichotomy

You can have a government that strongly encourages and rewards effort and innovation, but one that focuses on social justice too. This used to be the spiritual home of the Tories actually, before they lurched to the right.

The present Labour opposition is way to the left of this middle ish ground. I think many of their proposals are nonsense that won't work, and I think they're by some distance too left wing to gain sufficient electoral appeal to form a government.

The incoming Tory government is made of people who are as economically free marketeer (rabidly so - not just small state, but tiny/non-existant state) as any in living memory. Comfortably to the right of Thatcher. Many of them are also highly conservative (small c) in respect of social policy too, although they're trying hard not to show it. If this lot stay in government long enough to actually start forming policy and enacting legislation, I believe most of what they will come up with will be way too right wing for most in this country - basically in line with the Republican party in the US.
