Good player with injury problems signed as backup to Max, who will likely keep him out of the team for a year or so until he's poached by a big 6 club.
Byram would not need to drop a level, and would have time to get back to fitness and, possibly get chance to settle into a premiership squad.
We get the backup we need without having someone who is expecting to walk into the first team. But given the opportunity, could challenge the encumbant.

Be interesting to see if the medical means he's a Krul or a Jarvis
