Whataboutery has always been exactly what you see above. Someone sees a point being made about ‘their’ side that they don’t like. Rather than engage with that point and whether it’s valid, they respond by throwing an equivalent or parallel accusation at the ‘other’ side. To try and move the conversation or debate there, rather than it staying on the issue they don’t like about their own side.

And it is very much the favourite tactic of the right (although the left does do it sometimes.)
