I don't think the country 'could' be split any more than it is

The polls have been pretty consistent that there is a surprisingly stable leave/remain divide that hasn't shifted all that much from the referendum.

Its like WW1, both sides are deeply entrenched with no signs of progress.

(And much like WW1, when it is finally resolved, the losers are going to be deeply aggrieved and we are going to feel the repercussions of that for a long while yet)
