It's an extraordinary and needless own goal by the club

It may well result in extra revenues for a year or two but football clubs are not like other businesses in many respects. Upsetting the fan base can have long term consequences which are undesirable.

For example in recent years a number of times the club has reached out to the supporters asking for money to tide over tough times or to help with the academy and so on. We've dug in and helped as best we could at those times. I wouldn't like to say that if the club asked again now they'd get quite such a warm response.
