I don’t believe he viewed Maddison playing in the U21s as more important than playing for the full side in what was competitive tournament football. By the time Madders is available for the next squad Southgate will be picking the likes of Winks ahead of him.

As a manager he does not seem to be able to see the issue with the midfield line ups he keeps putting out. Loves a quick, fast winger or striker but has a blind spot when it comes to playmakers. He actually had Maddison in the squad for two games and didn’t give him a minute on the pitch.
