Saying that same sex couples shouldn't be protected by law in the context of the story referenced was both crass and indefensible.

Not sure what you've hoped to achieve from this. If it was to suggest that people with mental health issues should be treated kindly, I'm not sure that anyone would disagree with you. If you are suggesting that when someone with mental health issues makes a totally indefensible and crass statement, in the manner that happened yesterday, should not expect abuse... Not everyone here knows that background and even if they did I'd fully expect the robust response he got.
To what degree are you suggesting that mental health issues excuse a person from societal norms? If that was how such matters were treated, would that actually work in *anyone's* favour.
These are rhetorical questions.
I don't think by resuscitating this you've helped anyone at all.
