VAR isn't relevant to the discussion. Even without VAR yesterday no human eye could have possibly accurately judged that Lingard's foot was 6 inches ahead of that of a player about 30 yards away, so it could never have been given offside (as, of course, it wasn't by the linesman).
The problem isn't as much the law as its interpretation - nobody (human or VAR) could be CERTAIN that incident yesterday was offside so it shouldn't have been given. If you can't be sure of something don't give it.
