I have condemned it. I said bad behaviour should be called out and that

some of our fans can't hold their beer and act like tw*ts.

The reference to standing in a square for 8 hours is relevant because that's how these incidents tend to develop. England fans pitch up in a square somewhere, set up camp and basically drink all day. As the day goes on their get more and more boisterous and either some drunk idiot does something to annoy the locals or some locals turn up with the specific intent of trying to provoke the England fans and tension starts to build up. Often then the police over react and what would have been a relatively low key "skirmish" becomes an incident that appears a lot more serious with fans being battoned/injured/arrested etc.

For that reason I would always tend to avoid the main squares and head to bars off the beaten track which is what you will find most England fans in Porto will have done.
