Americanisation

The new global audience for football pretty much all support one of the 'giant' clubs. The big US sports only have about 30 top level teams each with no promotion/relegation so everyone following that sport in the world has to follow one of those teams. Football is heading that way. One globally important 'major' league and a load of 'minor' local leagues that nobody outside the countries concerned gives a monkeys about (since they have no access to or contact with the 'major' league).
